John Henry Frizzell papers, 1902-1971.

The bulk of the collection consists of Frizzell's addresses, lectures and various manuscripts. Subjects include "America," "Commencement," "Education," "American Literature, 1607-1870," and "Proverbial Philosophy in American Literature." The collection also includes a scrapbook titled "Memorabilia Pennsylvaniana, 1902-1906", a binder labelled "Chaplain's Book" which contains correspondence (1931-1946), minutes and reports of the Chapel Committee, lists of chapel speakers, and a folder titled "Unofficial History of the College of Liberal Arts" which consists of correspondence, memoranda and documents (1917-1918) relating to the resignation of English Department head Fred Lewis Pattee. The collection also contains a photographic scrapbook, audio tapes of a chapel address (1938), and an oral history interview (circa 1970). The chief correspondent in the collection is Fred Lewis Pattee.

John Henry Frizzell joined the Penn State English faculty in 1913. Fred Lewis Pattee was an American author, poet, teacher, scholar, and a leading authority on American literature. He was Professor of English and Rhetoric at Pennsylvania State College, and later became Professor of American Literature. In 1891 Pattee published his first book, LITERATURE IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS, and his first published verse collection was THE WINE OF MAY (1893).
